Rehabilitation of the Differently Abled

Understanding Specific Learning Disability (SLD): Every Child Can Learn

"Empowering Abilities • Promoting Inclusion • Transforming Lives"

An initiative of Bharat Educational and Social Charitable Trust, Puducherry, India for the ‘Rehabilitation of Differently Abled’

Every child is unique. While some children learn quickly through traditional teaching methods, others may need a different approach to understand, read, write, or solve mathematical problems. These children are not less intelligent—they simply learn differently.

Through its Rehabilitation for the Differently Abled initiative, Bharat Educational and Social Charitable Trust, Puducherry, is committed to creating awareness about Specific Learning Disability (SLD), promoting early identification, and supporting children and families with appropriate educational and rehabilitation services.

Our belief is simple: "Every child can learn when given the right support, encouragement, and opportunity."

Every Child Has the Ability to Shine

Understanding Specific Learning Disability (SLD)

"Every child can learn when given the right support, encouragement, and opportunity. Children with SLD are not less intelligent—they simply learn differently."

What is Specific Learning Disability (SLD)?

Specific Learning Disability (SLD) is a neurodevelopmental condition that affects the way a child receives, processes, stores, or expresses information. It mainly impacts academic skills such as reading, writing, spelling, and mathematics, even though the child has normal or above-average intelligence.

SLD is not caused by laziness, poor parenting, lack of effort, or low intelligence. With early intervention and appropriate teaching strategies, children with SLD can achieve remarkable success.

Common Types of Specific Learning Disability

Dyslexia
Difficulty in Reading
  • • Read slowly or inaccurately
  • • Confuse similar letters or words
  • • Difficulty understanding what they read
  • • Avoid reading activities
With structured reading instruction, children become confident readers.
Dysgraphia
Difficulty in Writing
  • • Untidy or inconsistent handwriting
  • • Struggle to organize thoughts in writing
  • • Make frequent spelling mistakes
  • • Difficulty copying from board
Supportive writing strategies & assistive tools greatly improve learning.
Dyscalculia
Difficulty in Mathematics
  • • Difficulty understanding numbers
  • • Struggle with calculations and concepts
  • • Trouble remembering multiplication tables
  • • Hard to estimate time, distance, or money
Practical learning methods & visual aids make mathematics more enjoyable.

Early Signs Parents & Teachers Should Notice

Early identification is essential. A child may need further assessment if they display several of the following:

  • Read much below expected level for age
  • Frequently reverse letters/numbers beyond early years
  • Have persistent spelling difficulties
  • Avoid reading or writing tasks
  • Find mathematics unusually challenging
  • Take much longer than classmates on schoolwork
Recognizing these signs early allows timely support and significantly better outcomes.

Myths and Facts

Myth: Not Intelligent

Fact: Most children with SLD have average or above-average intelligence. They simply process information differently.

Myth: They Are Lazy

Fact: Children with SLD often work harder than others but require specialized teaching methods.

Myth: Nothing Can Be Done

Fact: Early intervention, specialized teaching, family support, and encouragement make a significant difference.

How Can We Support Children with SLD?

Children thrive when families, schools, and communities work together:

  • Early screening & professional assessment
  • Individualized learning strategies
  • Special education & remedial teaching
  • Positive encouragement & emotional support
  • Visual, hands-on, & technology-assisted learning
Celebrate progress rather than comparing with others.
The Role of Parents

Parents play a vital role in building confidence:

  • Encourage rather than criticize
  • Appreciate effort as much as achievement
  • Read together every day
  • Create a calm and supportive study environment
  • Maintain regular communication with teachers and therapists
A child's self-confidence grows when they feel understood and accepted.

Inclusive Education: Learning Together

Inclusive education ensures that children with different learning needs have equal opportunities to succeed. Schools can support inclusion by:

  • Providing appropriate classroom accommodations
  • Allowing extra time when needed
  • Using multisensory teaching methods
  • Encouraging peer support and acceptance
  • Focusing on each child's strengths and potential
Inclusive classrooms benefit every student by fostering empathy, respect, and diversity.

Our Commitment

Under its Rehabilitation for the Differently Abled programme, Bharat Educational and Social Charitable Trust, Puducherry, is dedicated to:

  • Creating awareness about Specific Learning Disability
  • Promoting early identification and intervention
  • Supporting children through educational guidance and rehabilitation
  • Conducting awareness programmes for parents, teachers, and students
  • Encouraging inclusive education and equal opportunities
  • Building a society where every child is respected and empowered

A Message to Every Parent and Teacher

A child with a Specific Learning Disability does not need pity—they need understanding, patience, and the right support. When we recognize their strengths, encourage their efforts, and provide opportunities to learn in ways that suit them, they can achieve extraordinary success.

Many scientists, artists, entrepreneurs, and leaders have overcome learning challenges to make lasting contributions to society.

Together We Can Make a Difference

Every child learns differently—but every child deserves the chance to succeed.
